How to use Alt Text feature? •
Why should I care about Alt Text?
This tool, in our Bulk Image Edit app, allows you to easily edit the alt-text associated with your website's images using an assortment of template options. Creating quality Alt Text helps improve your rankings in Google Image Search, and also improves the user experience across your store for visually impaired users. How long does it take to update my Alt Text?
This depends on two things.
- How many images you are updating
- How many Alt updates are in our queue
Wait times can be anywhere from a couple of minutes up to a couple of hours depending on the time of day.
This guide walks you through how to access and use the ALT Text feature in Hextom Bulk Image Edit & SEO, allowing you to efficiently update ALT text for your product images.
Open Bulk Image Edit
- Go to your Shopify Admin.
- Navigate to Apps→ Bulk Image Edit & SEO by Hextom
- From the app dashboard, select ALT Text.
You will be redirected to the task setup page for editing image ALT text.
STEP 1: SELECT WHICH TYPE OF IMAGES TO EDIT
Choose which type of images you want to edit.
For this guide, we’ll use Product Images as an example, but you can also select:
- Collection cover images
- Blog Article images
- Content File images
Select the option that best matches your use case.
STEP 2: SET CONDITIONS TO FIND IMAGES FOR EDITING
After selecting the image type, available filters will appear.
Step 3: PREVIEW IMAGES MATCHING YOUR CONDITIONS
As you apply filters, a live preview will display the images that match your selection.
This helps confirm you’re editing the correct images before proceeding.
OPTIONAL STEP 4: MORE IMAGE FILE FILTERS
Additional optional filters may appear depending on your selection.
Use these to further narrow down the images included in the task.
This step is recommended for large catalogs to avoid unintended changes.
STEP 5: EDIT MATCHING IMAGES
Select how you want the ALT text to be updated from the drop down:
- Update image alt-text with recommended template - Image alt-text will be updated to product title.
- Update image alt-text with Custom template - You can choose one of the default options or customize your own template
- Replace text in image alt-text - Use this option if you want to replace text in the images' alt text.
- Remove text in image alt-text - Use this option if you want to remove text from the images' alt text.
For this guide, we will use the Update image alt-text with Custom template.
After selecting your ALT text update options, click Start Bulk Editing.
Once the task is completed, the images’ ALT text will be updated using the selected custom template.
